Tony
and Sue Pace going back to Tanzania. Can you help? Many
of you will have read and supported our winter work in Tanzania last year;
well we are planning to go back again to help build another school and we
would like your help. Osiligi
Secondary School is a new school on the plains north of Arusha. The
headmistress was the deputy head of Kimnyak School where we worked last
year. It has 85 pupils in Form 1 (equivalent to UK year 8) with 4
unfinished classrooms and a very basic toilet. Next January and each
following year, it will have to take in a further 150 pupils until they
reach a total of 600 students. So in addition to trying to provide
education, the school is a building site with different building in
various stages of incompleteness. You can’t imagine this in England
where the Health and Safety issues alone would not allow it to happen. In
Tanzania the local community (who are some of the poorest people in the
world) are expected to raise the funds for the basic buildings with the
government putting in floors and roof as and when they have the money. So
left to themselves, the school will struggle for many years before it can
provide a decent education. That is where we can help – with your help. If
we can get the school off to a good start, with some decent classrooms and
teacher’s houses, an administration building as well as water,
electricity and a kitchen, it will make a huge difference to the success
of the school for years to come. We know that education is the best way
out of poverty and secondary education gives the students the knowledge
and skills to become the leaders of the next generation. But building
costs money and that is what we are asking for. In Tanzania, where labour
is cheap, it is truly amazing how much can be built for so little: A
new classroom costs about £3,500. A
teachers’ house, for 2 teachers and their family, costs about £4,000. A
decent water supply will probably cost about £2,000. Getting
electricity connected may cost £1,000 –2,000. Of
course building with local labour helps in two ways. The school gets built
so the children get a better education, and more money gets put into the
local communities. So
will you help them by contributing to a fund for the school? We promise
that every penny you give will go to the school; we will meet all our own
travel and living costs and make our own contribution as well. There are
no overheads to reduce your contribution. If you are willing to make a
donation, we are raising a fund through a very local charity “The
Bugbrooke East Africa Trust” (Charity No. 1116470). Please make cheques
payable to “The Butonge Project”. If we can treat your donation as
Gift Aid we will be able to get a further 28% back from the government. Thank
you for your support. Tony
