Our
League season has now finished with our 1st X1 finishing 5th in Division 6,
the first time they have not had promotion since joining the Northamptonshire
League. They just failed to win a
number of matches with cancellations due to the weather with the wettest
summer ever and not bowling out opponents in drawn games; they only lost one
match all season. The 2nd X1 will
be relegated to Division 12 in 2008 but put in a lot of improved performances.
If
you wish to be involved with Junior Cricket contact Roger Stone
(01604-842961). This season we had Under 10’s, 12’s and 14’s matches.
Indoor nets will be available as usual this winter for both Juniors
& Seniors. Details will be published later but get in touch with Roger for
further details.
Our
Annual Dinner will be held as usual in the next few weeks,
details are not yet available but contact Lesley for advance
information. If you wish to join a
progressive club at its picturesque ground by the brook, get in touch with any
of the above officers or myself. We have a well stocked bar which is open most
days during the summer where Tony Bird will always give you a good welcome!

a look at our websites www.bugbrooke-cricket-club.bravehost.com &

Alzheimer’s
Society
Carers
come in all shapes, sizes and ages and are of varying relationships to the
person they are tending. Some of those with the most difficult and testing
tasks are dealing with people suffering from dementia – and in particular
Alzheimer`s.
Carers
of dementia sufferers need every bit of help they can find, and in South
Northamptonshire it is immediately available through the local branch of the
Alzheimer`s Society and its carer support worker, Elizabeth Churchill.
Dementia
can affect anyone. It is a progressive physical disease, not necessarily
associated with ageing, where the cells of the brain are destroyed. This leads
to memory loss, confusion, unusual behaviour and personality changes. It all
places a huge burden on carers, often close relatives, who most probably have
never had previous experience of such an illness. More and more they find
their lives taken up with looking after their loved ones.
In
Northamptonshire there are more than 7,000 people with dementia and since its
launch in 1999, the South Northants Branch of the Society has been supporting
carers – currently close to 100 of them. The Branch employs Elizabeth
Churchill to assist them, she provides a listening ear along with help and
support wherever she can.
The
branch runs a support group for carers on the second Tuesday of every month at
Mill House in Towcester and will fund care (from Crossroads and Northants
Careforce) to look after Alzheimer`s sufferers so that their carers can go to
support group meetings. Every Tuesday morning there is a drop-in for carers at
the Volunteer Bureau in Market Courtyard, Brackley between 9.30 a.m. and 12.00
noon and we have a drop-in at the Town Hall Meeting Room in Towcester on the
first Friday of every month from 10 a.m. until midday.
To
help to provide these services the local Committee raises funds in a variety
of ways which this year has included staging a 12-hour music marathon in
Towcester Town Hall that raised more than £4,500.
The
Society can offer information on things like welfare benefits, Council Tax
rebates and legal advice. Carers receive free membership of the Alzheimer`s
Society as well as being given guidance regarding social care, day care,
respite and care management.
Anyone
who would like to know more about the work of the Society can ring Branch
Chair, Margaret Lynch, on 01327 350899 or contact Elizabeth Churchill on 07747
034218.
Church Fete
The
postponed fete was held on Sunday 15th July and I am very pleased to report
that it was a very enjoyable afternoon with a break in the clouds at last. The
fete got off to a great start with the arrival of the Rose Queen, Harriet
Spittles, in a convertible cadillac.
Heartfelt
thanks go to all the stallholders who put in a lot of effort in the preceding
weeks as well as on the day of the fete, many of whom have been running the
same stall for several years (and I hope will continue to do so!). Thanks also
to all those who helped to prepare the field and set up the gazebos and then
clear away afterwards.
The
biggest thanks however, go to all the wonderful people of Bugbrooke who turn
out on the afternoon or buy their ducks beforehand. The atmosphere on the
field during the kids’ races and the duck race was great. The winning duck
was bought by a resident in West End.
The
complications of the weather and scheduling (clashes with many other villages)
taught us a few things this year which will help us to arrange an even better
afternoon out next summer. The 2008 fete will be on Saturday 12th July,
starting at 2pm.

Hello
everyone. At the time of writing
this I wonder have we had summer or is it yet to come?
May
23rd: We had a ploughman’s lunch and as always it was most enjoyable. Our
committee put a lot of work into this event. Thank you all six ladies.
June
27th: Our day out to Stratford-upon-Avon and it was a wet one; sad because
it’s a lovely place to see. The river was already too high for pleasure
boats to pass under bridges. On the journey home we enjoyed a meal at Napton
on the Hill.
July
18th: Today was our cream tea. What a lovely one too. Again the committee came
up trumps. The photo albums of many years were there to look through; so many
faces of past members, parties, happy times, etc. “Those were the days”.
This was our last meeting before the summer break.
July
21th: It was sad to hear of the passing of our regular member Mrs Ethel
Ellison, who helped with cups of tea and biscuits at our sales. We send the
club’s condolences to husband, Leslie and family.
At
present no one has come forward to run the club. If this continues, our
Christmas tea on December 19th will be the last meeting of the club. Our
members will be very sorry to see this happen after so many years of meeting
together every other Wednesday.
Mrs
D M French
Macmillan
Cancer Support
We
would like to thank everyone who supported the Cream Teas on Sunday September
9th in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Support.
The
total raised is now well over £500 and still rising. Thank you so much
everyone who came, also those who helped on the day, baked scones and cakes,
donated ‘bring and buy’ and raffle prizes, or gave donations.
Veronica and
Mike Chambers
Women’s
Institute
The
August meeting was a walk where other village institutes joined. At the end
they were served with tea and refreshments at the Community Centre. The next
meeting will be September 3rd, the speaker being Maureen Basford on
conservation of owls.
Bugbrooke
and District Flower Society
A
short report this issue, as we don’t have a meeting in August. However, in
July we watched Carol Vincent, with her superb flowers and lovely display
ideas entitled “Jewellery Box”.
We
look forward now to Barbara Priest visiting in September with her “Novel
Ideas”, and then our annual dinner in October, this year at Northampton
College Restaurant.
The
Club meets in Nether Heyford Village Hall on the fourth Monday of the month,
starting at 8pm, and you would be made most welcome.

Church
Bike Ride
Many
thanks to all who sponsored me to do the Historic Churches Trust bike ride. I
raised well over £200 – half of which will come directly to Bugbrooke
church. It must be about 20 years since I first did the bike ride with Esther
and the girls in the church choir! Will I be fit enough to do it again next
year?! Younger riders needed!!
