Playgroup Summer
has arrived and the children at playgroup have enjoyed sports day and a
trip to Gullivers Land before breaking up for their holidays. Playgroup
said good-bye to Jess Pell as their supervisor, as she will start her
PGCE at University of Northampton in September. A big thank you to her,
for all the hard work and commitment she has given to playgroup.
Victoria Tofte has been promoted to Playgroup Supervisor, and will be
taking up her position from September. Fundraising
has been our main aim throughout the summer; we have had a successful
“Ladies Night” and “Pampered Chef” evening. We would like to say
thank-you to Mr David Wray of Blade Sign & Print; for providing
playgroup with advertisements for our “Ladies Night”, and helping to
generate interest in our event. Pay
and Play sessions have also been popular throughout the summer. These
events have helped to generate funds towards a new outside covered area
for the children. Fundraising is to continue for the coming months and
ideas or participation is always welcome. Watch this space for up and
coming events! There
is the need for general committee members, due to the current members
moving on, and their children starting at Bugbrooke Primary School.
These positions are open to parents, grandparents or members of the
village who may be interested in volunteering some time to help us
provide playgroup provision within Bugbrooke. Any support would be
greatly appreciated. For details on becoming a committee member, please
contact Lisa Merry (Secretary), 01604 832488. Bugbrooke

Friends
of Campion
The
Friends of Campion is an organization that fundraises to purchase extras
for the school not met by the usual school budget e.g. picnic tables to
use at lunchtime, wardrobes for costumes and a recent donation went
towards the purchase of a replacement minibus. We
are very pleased to welcome all the new year 7 children to the school
and look forward to seeing their parents at our fundraising events, the
first of which is a quiz on Friday 12th October. I know many of you have
already been supporting our events for several years. The
quiz is open to all, not just parents of Campion children. Teams of 4,
and cost £6 per person. The evening includes a hot meal and you bring
your own liquid refreshments. To enter call 833900 or 07761016583 1st

Rainbows
have fun! They take part in indoor and outdoor activities as part of
their programme called the Rainbow Jigsaw. Our meetings are full of
games and activities which provide challenging opportunities for
Rainbows to think for themselves and take an active part in unit
decision-making. Everything a Rainbow does helps her to develop and
it’s an opportunity to look, learn, laugh and love. Any girl aged
between 5 – 7 years can become a Rainbow. We have 2 units and they
meet on Thursdays 4:45 till 6pm and Fridays 5 till 6:15pm. For more

and Harpole Scout Group Beavers
and Cubs have been busy looking for minibeasts, and finding ant tunnels
and woodlice under old logs and stones on the playing fields. They found
spiders, slugs and centipedes, which they examined with a magnifying
glass. Cubs found a toad, which they discovered doesn’t need water. Cubs
visited a farm with rare breeds of livestock; Longhorn cattle, Jacob
sheep and Saddleback sows with piglets. They enjoyed the sights but were
less sure about the farmyard smells! Scouts
have made outdoor fires using only one match each, and had their own
Wimbledon at Campion tennis courts. This was well supported. Cubs
and Scouts enjoyed their Centenary camp on the Primary School playing
fields 14th–15th July. Although we have had a wet June and July,
thankfully it was dry during the day. Beavers, families and friends came
to the Open Camp on Saturday afternoon, where after a flag break,
Beavers were awarded their Outdoor Challenge badges, and joined the
older boys in a game of rounders. Everyone enjoyed a good meal cooked in
our new kitchen tent, and the Cubs did the washing up! As night fell, a
camp fire was lit, and games and songs were followed by toasted
marshmallows and eventually bedtime. The following morning after an
excellent cooked breakfast, Cubs filled in their Centenary Camp
Passports, which included a nature trail, knots, good turns, and putting
up and taking down tents. Cubs liked knocking in the wooden tent pegs!
The Scout Group leaders and committee would like to thank headteacher
Mr. Cotter for allowing us to use the school playing fields, a secure
place for young people to camp locally.
On
Wednesday, August 1st, around 200 members of various groups from
Daventry District Scouts, marked exactly 100 years of Scouting, at the
Sunrise Big Breakfast, along with millions of scouts worldwide. Beavers,
Cubs, Scouts and Sea Scouts were joined by local dignitaries at
Brixworth Country Park, on a beautiful sunny morning, for a renewal of
promises, and the release of 100 balloons. Everyone tucked into a big
breakfast of cereal and bacon baps with veggie alternative. Local
celebrity, England Rugby player “Saint” Ben Cohen joined in the
celebrations and signed autographs. After breakfast, people took part in
activities. The older ones assembled on their bikes, and with the
District Commissioner’s instructions, “Remember it’s not a
race!”, ringing in their ears, set off cycling 7.5 miles round
Pitsford Reservoir. The younger ones went pond dipping, and found water
snails, caddis larva cases, fresh-water shrimps and water boatmen. Other
activities included orienteering, sensory trails and games on the field.
By the end of the morning everyone was ready for a drink of squash and
an ice cream. A full report of the event is available on www.daventryscouts.org.uk
with write-up, BBC Radio Northampton’s audio report, and lots of
photos, including some of our group, and Bugbrooke’s very own 4-legged
Cub! District
Commissioner Tony Inwood commended Scouting, saying, “It is the
biggest youth organisation in the world (28 million Scouts in over 160
countries), and still very popular in the county.” Incidentally, after
a change in national policy, girls are allowed to join all sections and
groups from this year.
Many
thanks go to the parents, Scouts, Cubs, a Brownie and a Guide, who
redecorated the Scout Hut during the holidays. Future activities include
rambling, archery, cooking and a barbecue. For information about the
Scout Group, please take a look at the website, www.bugbrookelink.co.uk/scouts Secretary,

St Michael’s Football Club The
new season has got under way with a great deal of enthusiasm and hopeful
expectation. The club has largely completed its renovations and is
concentrating its mind on the footballing side of its All
the senior sides are in better shape than last year and have started
their league programmes in promising style. The new managers have got
together good squads and will be looking to put their teams in
challenging positions in their leagues. All teams can look forward to
doing well in their cup competitions if the draws are kind to them. The
youth teams had an excellent club tournament on August Bank Holiday
weekend against teams from all over the county. They are now looking
forward to enjoying another season of competition in the John Henry
Youth League. They are all being well supported by their managers and
parents and will be looking to emulate the optimism of the senior sides. Much

been very busy improving facilities at the ground. His wife, Helen, is
also busily involved in the social side of the club and the committee is
working hard to maintain the club’s status as an FA Charter Community

them all. The clubhouse is open for refreshments at half time and full
time. There are youth matches on Sundays, and Northampton Town Ladies FC
can be seen at the club on Sunday afternoons. There
