Darby and Joan

Hello everyone, this is my last account of our club, which ended on December 19th after 50 odd years. It has given friendship and pleasure to all who became members.

November 7th: a fish and chip lunch, followed with money bingo.

November 21st: Mrs Lynne Clayson came today. Lynne is keen to start a new club and a vote was taken for a new name, being ‘The Wednesday Club’.

December 5th: Today we travelled to Wickstead Park for lunch and a Christmas show.

December 19th: Our Christmas tea. Catering again was by Mrs Pam Bird and her team; an excellent meal enjoyed by every member of the club and three tea ladies. Cards were exchanged and Mrs Sue Pace played piano for carols. Each member received a very nice present, with an extra token to spend. We sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Mrs Brenda Earl then a retiring present from members was given to our committee (Mrs R Steel and her famous five) for many years of running the club and work done, which provided much pleasure for members. Thank you from us all. To end our party we sang our closing hymn, then joined hands for Auld Lang Syne.

Bruce Piper

Bruce Piper died suddenly on the 23rd December. He had lived in Bugbrooke with his wife Judith for 24 years following his retirement from a career in insurance. He was always active in village life. He was chairman of the St Michael’s Music Society for a number of years, a former church treasurer, chairman of the OAPs Christmas gift scheme, a member of the British Legion, and a founder member of the Friends of St Michael & All Angels Church. He and Judith celebrated their Golden Wedding earlier in the year.

Many in the village will sadly miss him.

Mothers’ Union

November 8th. Members met at 2.30pm in Sunday School. The speaker, Ann Scott, spoke to us of the Mission she had started in Burma, having been shocked at the number of young children begging in the streets when she visited in 1968. Ann, a teacher of English in the Bugbrooke Primary School decided to devote her time establishing a home for them. It has taken her 37 years and the home was now supported by articles made in Burma, sold here for a small profit, by donations and with the help of many Christian friends. Many members purchased goods on offer.

November 22nd. Members met for a social evening at 15 Lime Grove. A short service was taken by Lyndsay. We were shown a short video showing how help is needed by central African states and how the help given by the M.U. was being used. Eight members attended.

On December 3rd, the Deanery Advent Carol Service was held in Kislingbury Church. Revd. Stephen French took the service, 40 members attended. Advent carols were sung, prayers said. Tea prepared by Kislingbury members was most enjoyable.

December 6th at 7.30pm, our village advent carol service was held in the Sunday School. Lyndsay took the service. There were readings and the  Hebrew Prophets were remembered and candles lit. Carols were sung and prayers said.  Then followed a social evening; 25 members attended including the Revd. Stephen French.

Get Ready for the Time Of Our Lives!

Professional musical comedy revue company Time Of Our Lives are returning to Bugbrooke. Following the great success of their previous shows All The World’s A Stage and Two For The One and Nines they have been invited back to perform their new fast-moving comedy revue Cool Britannia at the Campion School hall on the 29th of this month.

Cool Britannia is a comic and affectionate look at the British at work, rest and play and features their usual madcap mix of comedy sketches and music.

The sketches poke fun at our politicians and institutions and at our national obsessions like gardening and queuing, whilst the music is a rich mix of Brit pop from the 60s to the 90s, West End musical hits, comic numbers from the likes of Flanders and Swan, Noel Coward and Gilbert & Sullivan and a rousing Last Night of the Proms.

The show promises to be a fun night out for all ages and, if last years’ was anything to go by, will be hugely popular.

The performance is at 8pm on Friday the 29th of February and tickets are £7.50.

You can book now by calling Shirley Myers on 01604 831406.

Bring your own nibbles and wine and sing along with Time Of Our Lives Music Theatre.

18 February 2008 – Ann Banfield ’The Work of the Citizens Advice Bureau’

Ann is the Bureau Manager of the Daventry CAB and will be giving us an insight into how it operates at the end of which she will answer members’ questions. The Citizens' Advice service helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice, and by influencing policymakers. Every Citizens' Advice Bureau is a registered charity reliant on trained volunteers and funds to provide these vital services to local communities.

17th March 2008 – Peter Barratt, ‘A Suffragette in the Family’

We all have some knowledge of the trials and tribulations the Suffragettes suffered in securing the right to vote for women through fair means or foul in the early 20th century.  Peter Barratt's Great Grandmother, Alice Hawkins, was a leading Suffragette in Leicester 100 years ago. Peter will give us a stirring account of the activities of the movement at that time and Alice's part in this fight for the women's right to vote. Peter's talk will be illustrated with Suffragette memorabilia handed down over the generations of his family.

Meetings are open to non-members and take place at Bugbrooke Community Centre, Camp Hill, Bugbrooke on the 3rd Monday of each month at 2.30 p.m.

Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club

As we approach the last weeks of the season the senior teams, with the exception of the first XI, are all performing very well in their respective leagues. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides might be in a position to pick up runners-up awards and the Reserves have performed well following their promotion into the top division of the UCL last season. However, after a very promising start, the first XI have dropped below half way in their league. Hopefully a good finish to the season will raise them into the top six.

The youth teams are all getting good experience and enjoying their football. Some of the teams are in contention for league and cup honours and a good finish to the season could cause celebrations at season’s end. All the youth teams have good training programmes and their work at Campion School is bearing fruit.

The club continues to make progress off the field under the sound guidance of Treasurer Willy Marriott, General Manager Dave Sharp and grant co-ordinator Brian Curtis. The next improvement will be permanent hard standing around the perimeter of the main pitch to be followed by improvements to the floodlighting system. The new system will be more eco-friendly with updated, more efficient lamps situated more equally around the pitch. The scheme will also cause less light spillage into the sky. The scheme will be financed by the club with grant assistance from the Football Foundation, which is the lottery branch of the F.A.

John Mundy: Chairman & Treasurer 830725 (H, B & FAX) 07850-084535

There was a good attendance at our AGM last month with 25 present. The main changes are that Len Sackley has very kindly taken over from John Mundy the very important job of treasurer – our many thanks to John who has been doing the job for many years.  Lesley Bird has resigned as secretary and our many thanks to her for all her hard work. We have 2 Saturday League teams this 2008 season with the 1st playing in League 6 & the 2nd in League 12.

We have Friendly matches every Sunday until the end of September with midweek matches also. If you wish to be involved with Junior Cricket contact Roger Stone (01604-842961). Last year we have had Under 10’s, 12’s & 14’s with Under 15’s in past years, but this depends on the amount of support for each age level. Indoor nets will be available for juniors up to age 15 at Campion School every Thursday 6 to 7pm from 17th January to 20th March. Seniors will be at Caroline Chisholm School, Wooldale Road,  Wootton  every Sunday 7 to 8pm from 27th January to 16th March.  For both juniors & seniors just turn up or get in touch with Roger for further details.

If you wish to join a progressive Club at its picturesque ground by the brook get in touch with any of the above officers or myself. We have a well stocked bar which is open most days during the summer where Tony Bird always gives you a good welcome!  Have a look at our websites www.bugbrooke-cricket-club.bravehost.com &    www.bugbrooke.play-cricket.com for further information & chat.

Letter from Sue and Tony Pace working in Tanzania

We  arrived safely 10 days ago (it seems like weeks) and had a very slow first few days.  We were tired after the journey (which was OK) and still had to get over our colds.  We moved up to our homestay on Sunday and it really was just like coming home.  It is amazing how content we are living so simply.

When we first saw the school (last Monday) it was a bit of a shock because there is even less of it than we had thought.

The school has been working with just one classroom last year with 85 students !!!  There are also two partly completed classrooms.  They were both supposed to be finished before the start of this year but they won’t be. One of these two classrooms is being built by the community and they have run out of money; although it has a roof on, and no floor or windows.  The other is being built by the government and is progressing very slowly.  However it seems to have speeded up since we arrived on the scene.  We hope to see both these classrooms finished within 2-3 weeks but in the meantime there is nowhere for the 120 new students due to arrive next Monday!!! The other buildings are the toilets and the kitchen blocks.

We immediately got work started on completing the unfinished Community classroom and since then Tony has been organising materials and planning later work.  We had a great meeting on the first day with the whole school board and all the community leaders and they have continued to show a lot of interest.  Sue has been doing some painting of metal window frames and then puttying glass.

Besides several buildings that we may get done, the other problem is water.  Basically the school doesn’t have any and has to buy it in (actually pay for the petrol to bring it).  There seems to be a way we can help both the school and surrounding community by laying or repairing a pipe and we are investigating the scale of the problem before making any commitments.

So right now we have lots of plans but no real idea of costs.  These will develop over the next few weeks.  We hope to start the Admin Block in the coming week and that will free up a classroom.  It is already clear that by the time we leave they should have 4 classrooms instead of one but after that we shall see.  They will desperately need at least one more double classroom before next year.

At the end of our first full weeks work we are feeling very healthy. We can already see the first signs of weight loss because of more healthy diet and more exercise – or could it be less alcohol!!  Sue’s back is holding up well and seems to be improving slowly, with the help of Brufen and lots of sun.  85+ most days (and we are working and walking hard in it) though on Thursday we had one huge thunderstorm just as Sue was doing her first wash.
