BBC School Report

Pupils at Campion School were making the news in March with a special BBC news report.

Key Stage 3 students joined in the BBC challenge to produce a 20 minute radio package on Thursday, March 13 for a 4pm deadline.

Alan Hackett, head of media, explained Campion’s radio programme included the themes of the year of reading, holocaust memorial and the role of graphic novels in dealing with controversial topics.

The radio package, which aired on the BBC website, included an interview with graphic novelist, Alan Moore and triathlete, Holly Avil, as well as clips and interviews edited on the day.

More information about the challenge and the schools that took part with a news broadcast is available online at www.news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/school_report/default.stm.

The Day the Church Was Struck by Lightning

These photos have been supplied by Mrs Doris Pearson of Spencer Close together with her recollections of the lightning strike in July 1940.

She was then living at the ‘Mill’ with husband Jack and decided to walk into the village on the July afternoon in 1940. When a storm blew up, she ran to Mrs Hefford’s house opposite the old Manor House on High Street, for shelter. Just as she entered there was an almighty bang, which was when the church spire was struck.

Johnny Leach who was a Dr Barnardos evacuee aged 7 at the time, was boarded in Bugbrooke, and caught a much closer impression of it. His recollection is that he was sheltering from the storm under the west end belfry door on the 23rd July 1940 when the strike happened. He remembers masonry falling all around him and all of the bells coming down. He ran out towards West End, and tripped over, and in front of him lay a fireball that hit a Laburnum bush. That’s where they later found him still huddled up. He said he thought Hitler had found him, as Barnardo’s had told him they were moving them from London to hide them away because Hitler was looking for them.

Parents and Friends of Campion School

The Parents and Friends association exists to fund raise to purchase items for school not covered by the regular school budget, for example, picnic tables, outdoor table tennis tables and basketball hoops, wardrobes for costumes and specialist textile cutting machines.

Each year we raise money by selling refreshments at school concerts and also we host a quiz evening during the autumn, a cycle ride at the Silverstone Circuit in June, a theatre trip and a Dinner and Dance in the school hall.

This year the Dinner and Dance is on Saturday 10th May starting at 7.30pm. It is an opportunity to dress up and enjoy a three course meal followed by dancing, with no need for taxis home afterwards. We operate a licensed bar and even give you a free drink on arrival. Only £15 a ticket available now from Gillian Stone on 07761016583.

This year’s theatre trip is to ‘Hairspray’ at the Shaftesbury Theatre for the evening performance on Monday 5th May (bank holiday Monday). Top price stalls ticket and return coach travel from the school leaving at 3pm. £50 per ticket. I have 6 tickets left, first come, first served!! Telephone number as above.
