Bugbrooke
and District Flower Society Bugbrooke Flower Society was formed in 1974, the
original founders being Mrs Cherry Pilcher and the late Mrs Renee
Scarsbrook. They were swiftly joined at a coffee morning by Mrs Anne
Bird and Mrs Maureen Wright, together with others. The newly formed
society met in the Sunday School, Bugbrooke, where we have been ever
since. The Society has gone from strength to strength, changing its name
along the way to Bugbrooke and District Flower Society to encompass its
wider appeal. We are, however, a victim of our own success and for some
time have been somewhat crowded at the Sunday School. After much
discussion, a vote was taken by all members, regarding alternative
venues, and the outcome is that as from next month our new home will be
Nether Heyford Village Hall. Our first demonstration of 2007 was “Nature’s Wonder” by Mr. Lee
Berrill, and what a wonderful show he put together for us. It has been
mentioned by several members that his flowers were some of the most
magnificent we have seen. We also had a visitor, Hillary Walden, who
came to accept a cheque for Favell House, our chosen charity for last
year. Our next demonstration at the new venue of Nether Heyford Village Hall on
Monday March 26th will be “Inspired by…” with Ann Sinclair, at the
usual time of 8pm. This is followed in April by Tan Strong, a National
demonstrator and the title is “All that Glistens”. Meanwhile members are busy preparing for our now
famous Mammoth Plant Sale on May 6th at Campion School. This is our main
fundraiser of the year and we will be collecting pots, etc., sowing
seeds, taking cuttings and splitting plants, so if you have a gap to
fill, or like a bargain, put the date in your diary now! Veronica Chambers Bugbrooke
and Harpole Scout Group Cubs have been busy over the winter months. They went
on an evening hike with torches and fluorescent jackets along Bugbrooke
footpaths, going round the cricket ground and across the sheep field,
playing a wide game on the Millennium Green and getting back to the Hut
by a circular route. They have made pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and
finger football players, who had a game of football on a pitch marked
out on the Hut floor. They have designed and constructed 3D model
dinosaurs in teams of four. It’s amazing what you can do with
cardboard, tissue paper, string, paint and art straws if you’re
feeling creative. Scouts took part in the Winter “Brass Monkeys” camp at Overstone in
association with Braunston Scouts. They had all kinds of weather, frost,
hail, wind and rain to cope with, not unexpected in January, and enjoyed
rifle shooting, an aerial slide and other activities that made it all
worthwhile. In early February, the Group “Splat the Leader” fundraiser was a
great success, Jumble was cut up, soaked in warm water and thrown at our
game Scout Leader who retaliated by throwing it back. Everyone within
range rapidly got wet and muddy, and all for a good cause. A big thank
you goes to everyone who sponsored the boys. Three teams of Scouts are busy making go-karts for a Daventry District
race (all the Scout Groups in the Daventry region). One of the special
kits available has been purchased for our youngest members, the other
budding engineers are making karts to their own design and choice of
materials. Metal shelving comes in handy for a sturdy framework, along
with plywood for panels, old plastic chairs for comfortable seats and
wheelchair and bicycle wheels for mobility. The Scouts Kart race will be
held in Daventry town centre on April 21st as part of the St George’s
Day celebration. The lads are camping for the rest of the weekend at
Welton “green field” site. This is a new experience for them,
facilities are basic! 2007 is a unique year in Scouting worldwide, as it is 100 years since
Scouting was started by Lord Baden-Powell, who ran a camp for boys on
Brownsea Island in August 1907. To celebrate the Centenary of Scouting,
Daventry District has planned a series of Join-in-Scouting activities
which started with the “Brass Monkeys” camp in January that our
Scouts enjoyed. The St. George’s Day races are open to the public in
Daventry on April 21st. In May, Scouts are going to Youlbury Scout
Activity Centre, and joining in the fun at the “Dr Who” camp with
activities from past, present and future. Closer to home, our leaders are planning a camp on the school playing
field in Bugbrooke for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in the summer - watch
this space! For more information about the Scout Group, please visit our website,
www.bahscouts.co.uk, or ring the contact number. We are grateful to two
Duke of Edinburgh Award students who are doing a great job assisting our
Cub Leaders. We are in urgent need of new Beaver Leaders to run the
Beaver Scout Colony (6–8 year olds). If you can help, the committee
would be very pleased to hear from you. Margert Raymond, secretary. 830532. Darby
and Joan Hello everyone, writing this on March 5. It’s still
wet and windy as on January 1st when I wrote the last report, but we did
have some snow in between, which brought lots of fun for children who
enjoyed the fact school was closed for a short time. February 14: Mrs Dolly Harvey treated us to sherry and cake to celebrate
her recent big birthday, we all wish her good health for the future. February 28: Today we had fish and chip lunch followed by quizzes and
money bingo. Anyone interested in becoming leader or treasurer of our club can ring

History Group The History Book production group are now quietly
putting together the photographs and text in preparation for a
photographic record of the village up to 1960. The next step will be to
involve a printer and discuss potential price and book size. On Thursday June 14th the group will be meeting at the Community Centre
at 7.30pm to hear a talk from Derek Smeathers about the Battle of Naseby. Did you know? Rainbows Bridge, which is the canal bridge on the public
footpath from Bugbrooke to Eastcote (next to the railway footbridge) is
named after Jimmy Rainbow. When there was a level crossing on the
railway (before electrification) Jimmy would control any traffic going
to and from Littliff Farm. He had a little hut by the side of the track
and many youngsters would go and sit with him and listen to his tales.
He lived with his family in a house immediately adjacent to the railway
track and to the left of the crossing. He brought up 3 girls here –
Vera, Joan and Ann – and people often wondered how they managed to
sleep with steam trains thundering past throughout the night. Jimmy
always claimed the only time he could not sleep was Christmas Day when
it was too quiet! John Curtis Bugbrooke
Strollers As Spring approaches, this is a
good time for new strollers to consider joining this friendly group.
During April and May we will be visiting Courteenhall, Bradden, Harpole,
Whittlebury, Everdon, Potcote and Blisworth as well as a couple of local
walks. The last Thursday of each month always finishes with a pub lunch.
All walks start at 10am on Thursdays and if you want to find out more

conscious by highlighting awareness of various issues that are relevant
to “mature” drivers. See you there – drive with care! AGM and Annual Buffet Lunch – May 21st (members only) This meeting will start at 12.30pm After a short AGM, members will be served with a
tipple of sherry and the usual culinary delights of our Annual Buffet

always absolutely scrumptious and made even more enjoyable shared with
good friends. There will also be an artistic display from our very own

on Friday 14th September at Franklins Gardens. Booking forms are
available on www.campion.northants.sch.uk , Campion reception,

sell nine the tenth is free. All friends, pupils (over 18) and staff
past and present will be very welcome. Details

of Campion School I write this after having watched a fantastic
production of ‘West Side Story’ performed by the students of Campion
School on the first weekend in March. The Friends of Campion School fundraises to help provide those little
extras at the school that cannot always be bought from the normal school
budget. I am so pleased to be able to say that the Performing Arts
department is one that we are able to regularly support when you can see
that such high quality shows are being performed. Part of our fundraising is to hold an annual Dinner and Dance in the
school hall. We provide a reception drink on arrival, three course meal,
licensed (not overpriced!) bar and dancing. Only £15 per person for a
great value night out. (Best dresses a nice touch
but not compulsory!) This year’s dance is to be on Saturday 14th July. Please join up with
your friends and call me to book some tickets. We promise it will be a
great night out. Gillian 831523 / 07761016583 60’s

Playgroup Spring is here and there are new beginnings for
playgroup. We are pleased to
“have on-board”, two new Playgroup Assistants, Kate Meech and Alex
Ward-Gonzales. Kerrie Russell has resigned from her position as Chairperson, due to
family commitments. We would
like to take this opportunity to say a big “thank you” for her hard
work and dedication. We now
have a new nominated chairperson, Kay Wells-Morris, who joined in
January 2007. We welcome her
to playgroup as well as our other new committee members; Lavinia
Phillips, Vicky Greening and Jo Sharp. In September, we will need new general committee members and the roles of
Vice-Chairperson and Fees, due to the current members moving on as their
children start at Bugbrooke Primary School.
These positions are open to parents, grandparents or members of
the village who may be interested in volunteering some time to help us
provide playgroup provision within Bugbrooke.
Any support would be greatly appreciated.

Craft Club A new club for the over 60s started on 26th January.
20 villagers attended the inaugural session of the Jubilee Craft
Club and each one left clutching greetings cards they had made during
the afternoon. This was
followed up with a session making Easter cards and one making and
decorating gift boxes. If you feel like an hour or two of simple crafting please don’t
hesitate – come and join in. The
sessions are relaxed and informal and help is always on hand if you need
it. The club is held on the 4th Friday of each month in Jubilee House at the
end of Meadway in Bugbrooke starting at 2pm. Rosemary Harries
(01604 830117) Please also remember the Bingo sessions for the over
60s held on the 2nd Friday of each month at 2pm in Jubilee House Bugbrooke
Allotments Association The new season is about to start and we are looking at
our plots wondering why we did not do all that winter digging and then
we remember that it looked like a paddy field when we wanted to do it.
Well that’s my excuse! The water supply has been extended to the top of the central drive so
that the water butts on the plots at the higher end can be filled more
conveniently. Eddy Fonge has volunteered to lag the tap so it will
withstand the winter weather; if any one would volunteer to do the same
to the bottom tap I would be most grateful. The E-on power company are refurbishing the transformer situated in the
hedge at the bottom of the allotments. There was a meeting between E-on
and the Parish Council (Emma Bignell attended on our behalf); the
proposal is that the orientation of the transformer will be in line with
the hedge instead of at right angles to it. This orientation would mean
that a stabilizing stay would have to come into the broad area of grass
at the bottom of the allotments opposite Kathy Hall’s plot. E-on have
given an assurance that it will not interfere with the movement of
members vehicles around the one way system i.e. up the central drive and
down the side adjacent to Pinnegar & Barnes. Although E-on have given their assurance I would like to know the height
and width of members’ vehicles so that I can pass this information on
to them so that the stay does not impede members’ access. At a recent committee meeting we found that some members had not paid
this years rent for their plots, on checking we found that the details
we hold on members were not complete and so I would ask all plot holders
to contact me by telephone, letter or E-mail to confirm their contact
details. If you would find
it more convenient please contact Kathy Hall or Vicky Greening. Contact details are as
follows: Bev Dinsey Chairman 830198 (answer phone) Kathy Hall
Treasurer 831956 Vicky Greening Secretary
831385 Bugbrooke Church Village Fete The fete will be held on the church field by the brook
on Saturday 23rd June 2007 starting at 2pm. There will be all the usual
games, bric-a-brac, craft and garden stalls as well as the duck race and
raffle. Afternoon tea with sandwiches and cakes will be on offer whilst
being entertained by the Youth Orchestra, Children’s Races and a
Gymnastics display. New for this year! – we will have a beer tent and plan to extend the
afternoon into an evening Barbeque (weather and partygoers permitting!) Note the date!! 23rd June.
Family Announcements Postie Dave Hartgrove would like to thank all customers, friends and colleagues for their cards, best wishes and gifts on his retirement from the Royal Mail.
